In November 2015 we were invited to a great event in a grandious building and in the best company. It was a timetravel to 1775 and as I hadn‘t reenacted this period since longer, I had a slight problem. My favourite francaise would have fitted in the style, but I wanted something new. I hadn‘t worn a polonaise since long and liked to have one again. The two „polonaises“ (yes, I know they aren‘t polonaises in the true sense of the word) didn‘t fit me anymore and as I hadn‘t got enough time to sew new a entire new one and didn‘t wanted to invest a lot of money I decided to make it an upcycling-project.

As a base I used one of my earliest works that was already 12 years old than, the lavender Polonaise, that did not fit me anymore. I had absolutely no single scrap of that fabric left and so I thought about how an 18th century dressmaker would have solved the problem. With piecing of course! So it would get addtitional strips in the center front that would be hidden under ruches.

The second element I used was a unloved dress. I had made that early 1790s robe in a hurry and had no chance to really fit it. One reason was that my body was in constant change (yes the little Lady on my arm is my daughter), the other was that I didn't want to wear full stays, because of breastfeeding my dauther and she was it who would also let me have not much time for sewing. As I said it was made in a rush and the result didn't please me very much. The bodice wasn't of any use, so I unpicked it from the skirt and made this in to a petticoat by attaching a waistband. I had scraps of this fabric left and so I could use them for the ruches on the robe, which also created an optical connection to them.

Buttons!

This is only a quick lifesign from me, I just wanted to share the shop of a very talleted friend, who makes reproductions of extraordinary 18th century buttons. Painted buttons like these were the dernier cri in the 1770s to 90s:

People often tell me „you look so period, how do you manage that?“ Well looking really as you had stepped out of a painting goes a bit beyond using the right patterns and fabrics. You can make a pretty historical accurate dress and then spoil the whole effect with the wrong styling. And you could avoid this just by following some very simple rules.
DISCLAIMER: If you just like dress-up, are a cosplayer, larper etc. you are of course completely free how to style your costume, this post is thought for those who are aiming a historical correct look.

Therefore I have put on one of my dresses and made virtually every „mistake“ you can usually make.
That the wig I‘m wearing on the first pic is ehm.... you should even see if you are not an expert.

-Seitenscheitel
-Haube unmotiviert irgendwo im Nacken
-Modernes buntes Make-up
-Moderner Strassschmuck
-Kurze Spitzenhandschuhe
-Keine Strümpfe
-Irgendwelche Schuhe
-Keine Chemise

So, let‘s put it aside and make a hairdo....
Where are the mistakes? A little list:
-sideparting
-cap worn unmotivated somewhere at the back head
-modern colourful make-up
-modern rhinestone jewlery
-short lace gloves
-no stockings
-any shoes
-no chemise

And here is the counterexample:

-the hair is styled in a period manner (well, this needs a bit of training)
-the cap is on top of the head
-the face is painted in a pale colour, lips and cheeks rosy
-around the neck a ruffle - it would be even better to wear a black ribbon, broad or narrow, with or without pendant
-ellbowlength mittens (well they should be a bit longer ;) ) gloves are correct too, but please made of fabric or leather not of polylace
-what you can‘t see here, I wear stockings made of cotton or silk and matching shoes (you can get them here: pretty cheap if you life in Europe at reenactors or a bit more expensive in the US American Duchess handmade in Britain by Sarah Juniper or handmade in the Czech Republic by Miroslav Umlauf
-also the neckline is covered with a fichu, I found it at a thriftstore, if you aren‘t so lucky you can use cotton batist or gaze instead
-a little bouquet of silkflowers is a charming contrast (found here: Gildebrief)

Last weekend I had the chance to join a wonderful ball (if there will be any public pics I will post them) It was set in 1800 and that meant I needed a new gown.

Fortunatelly I found a fashion plate that made it unneccessary to sew an entire ensemble. An overgown and turban were suficcient to dress up an old gown.

With the headdress I took some freedom, just because I thought this feather thingy too silly ;)

According to my promise I show some more pictures of details of the frock coat from the Hamburgmuseum. The pockets are quite interesting, underneeth the flaps you can see - nothing. The pockets themselves are worked into the side pleats. The seam under the pocketflaps has no real funktion, it might be due to at least one big makeover that happened to the garment.

A little hint to Jane Austen... because when I was allowed to examine this blue frock in the Hamburgmuseum (a big thank you to Mrs. Hildebrandt who made it possible!), I had to think of Mr. Bingley. The first version of the novel was finished in 1797 and this elegant garment fits exactly into this period.

The first detail that I want to show, are the plain but elegant buttons that were made with a lot of effort. Not just cast metall, but a kind of foil that was put on a base. I couldn't really make out the material of the base, but I think it is wood.

Since long I wanted to show this project, but I wanted to wait until I got pictures of it while it is worn, they aren't existing yet, but now I'm writing about it anyway.

In the late 18th century you can find printed kerchifs/cravats for gentlemen for daywear on various fashionprints and paintings. I wanted to recreate such a cravate since long but I never got the right elan for it until I bumped into the stall of http://www.blauweisschen.de/ at the "Nadelwelt" craftfair in Karlsruhe this spring. There they sold exactly the stamps I needed and you got a very professional and friendly introduction into this technique. I was so enthiusiastic, I could hardly decide what printing blocks to buy.
In the end I choose a twine, a little blossom and a twigg. I also bought the classical blue colour.
Printing with wooden blocks needs a bit of experience and with the batist fabric I didn't had the easiest fabric to handle, but I think for a first trial it's ok.
On the dressstand I draped it like a fichu, so that the pattern can be seen better, but it is intendet to be worn as a cravate by a gentleman.Cécilehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02009738211287483235noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5565731039625788574.post-79764196211330169122014-12-05T08:54:00.001+01:002014-12-05T09:20:41.491+01:00Gerade noch rechtzeitig...Gerade noch rechtzeitig ist die "Nancy Horsefall"- Babydecke fertig geworden. Just in time I finished the "Nancy Horsefall" babyblanket. Now it is for somebody else than initially planned ;)
The spelling mistakes and the wrong word (it should be "Holy angels guard thy bed") are taken from the original.

Actually I didn't need this pair of stays but as I had the oportunity I wanted to find out if the extant stays that are often labeld as "probably maternity stays" would work in reality.

So I did recreate the pattern from Jill Salen's "Corsets". It happend to be quite easily to adapt for my figure.
I hope I will be able to wear it still in the future, just with closed side lacings.

It is made of two layers of cotton an outer layer of silkdamask and a linnen lining, boned with reed and some steel and leather binding.

Two years ago I had sewn this 1740's style dress and a very large panier. Unfortunatelly I didn't had any opportunity to wear it yet. But this april we had a little gathering which was set in the year 1749, and so this lovely piece of silkdamask could leave my wardrobe at last. Alas, the panier was to broad for the location and so I thought of a trick that you can see in Janet Arnold's "Pattern of fashion 1". Drawstringcases in the sidepannels! With their help you can draw in the width. So I had a dress less ostentatious but more appropirate for conversation and dance.
The smart gentleman at my side is a dear friend and wears a banjan made of the same fabric.

After the little teaser I will now show you more substatial photos.
At the moment I'm making goldwork that shall be appliquèd to a just-au-corps one day. In the 18th century it was called "broderie en rapport", you could buy this ready-made a the embroiderer and then embellish a finished garment with it. It's a pity that today you can't just walk into a shop and buy something like this, and therefore I have to diy.

First I have freehand drawn a motiv after a painting and then traced it with chalkpaper to silktaffeta. The outsidelines I embroidered twice with couched japansilk .

After that I filled two areas with plate. The plate is applied to the right side of the fabric in a zickzack pattern and only the "turns" are secured with a stitch of silkthread.

Now comes the most labourintensive part. The cantilles. Therefore you first need a padding, the bigger parts I padded with woolfelt the smaller I only padded by making some stitches with doubbled silkthread. The felt has to be a bit smaller than the actual motiv and the edges should be cut a bit round so that it all looks organic and there are no ugly angles. The cantilles are used like beads except you have to cut them to the needed size, this is quite fiddly because you only can rely on your visual judgement.

At last everything is embellished with spangles, to hold them in place a tiny piece of cantille is threaded with them.

Contemporary terms can be confusing especially with garments, if they are called different in modern secondary sources. I recognized that even longtime re-enactors and costumers get confused with all this names and so I try to untangle this a bit.

I refer only to mid 18th century in this case.

Was ist also ein Just-au-corps?

So, what is a just-au-corps? In the scene this term is so widely used that you could think everything with two sleeves and some pleats is one, but of course it is not that simple. A just-au-corps has buttons and buttonholes all along the centerfront, it has no collar and in the center back it has additional pleats and nonfunctional buttonholes from the waist to the hem. It also has nonfunctional buttonholes on the pocketflaps and cuffs. It can easily have over 50 buttonholes and these are quite long!

A similar garment with a collar and with buttons and buttonholes only to waistlevel, with pleats next to the centerback but with only four to six buttonholes there is, according to "L'art du tailleur" by Garsault , called a Surtout. There seem to be garments that are only partly like this (like the example below) I don't know if they also had a distinct name.

In many modern sources they say that the frock had developed from the just-au-corps, but I want to disagree with this because they existed parallel. In 1769 France Garsault already describes it and in England it was fashionable even earlier. It's charcteristic is the lack of pleats in the centerback instead it has just a slit or a small overlap and it has a collar.

At last a little post from me, because I have finished a blanket. But not the original repro-quilt, instead the "plan-b-blanket"... why plan b? Because I have realized that we needed a babyblanket, that won't look too modern for a 18th century event in march, so we can leave the modern stuff at home. I have made a quick babyblanket from repro-fabrics. I'm completely aware of that it is not historically correct at all! No one would have used such big pieces for patchwork in these days. But as I said it is just a quick solution and it is not a museum event.

The first panel is finished! I already seem to be a bit dizzy, while scaling the appliques I did a fault and they turned out way too big, but when I recognized it I already had sewn the hearts/leaves in the middle... that's why I did omit the other leaves and only used the stars - as I already said, it isn't meant to be an exact copy ;o)

After I have finished my last patchwork project quite some time ago it is time to start a new one. I have gathered quite a nice collections of printed quiltfabrics with patterns from the 18th to mid-19th century (or at least in the style of that time) and so it shall be a historic quilt.

My choosen model can be found in the book "19th century embroidery techinques" by Gail March. It is a babyblanket made in the year 1834 by a certain Nancy Horsefall and I think it is quite the right thing to wellcome a new arrival :-)

I don't intend to make a exact copy of the original and I will make some shortcuts concerning authenticity ( for example I will use polyesterbatting because of hygiene) and I won't copy the asymmetries and inaccuracies of the original.

Here are the first steps for the middle panel. I made the appliques like described in the book, without modern gadgets like freezerpaper. I just did turn the open edges under with the needle and then did crease it with the finger before sewing.

After a long break I'm now back and want to say that this will be the first of several postings that maybe is of some interest to you.

Earlier this year I was so lucky to be allowed to examine some original clothes of the 18th century in the Hamburgmuseum. Again, I want so say thank you to Mrs. Hildebrand the textileconservator of the museum for making this possible.

The first piece that I want to show is a suit coat with matching waistcoat from around 1760:
I don't know, but if you were considered accomplished if you could play and sing the new songs that were printed in the "Lady's magazine", I don't want to know what that girls that were discribed by Jane Austen as "without any talent" did produce on their instruments...

Well to give you an impression of such a song I have photographed one from december 1801.
It is really not difficult for anybody who had at least some years of pianolessons.
