The marriage of two dresses

In November 2015 we were invited to a great event in a grandious building and in the best company. It was a timetravel to 1775 and as I hadn‘t reenacted this period since longer, I had a slight problem. My favourite francaise would have fitted in the style, but I wanted something new. I hadn‘t worn a polonaise since long and liked to have one again. The two „polonaises“ (yes, I know they aren‘t polonaises in the true sense of the word) didn‘t fit me anymore and as I hadn‘t got enough time to sew new a entire new one and didn‘t wanted to invest a lot of money I decided to make it an upcycling-project.

As a base I used one of my earliest works that was already 12 years old than, the lavender Polonaise, that did not fit me anymore. I had absolutely no single scrap of that fabric left and so I thought about how an 18th century dressmaker would have solved the problem. With piecing of course! So it would get addtitional strips in the center front that would be hidden under ruches.

The second element I used was a unloved dress. I had made that early 1790s robe in a hurry and had no chance to really fit it. One reason was that my body was in constant change (yes the little Lady on my arm is my daughter), the other was that I didn't want to wear full stays, because of breastfeeding my dauther and she was it who would also let me have not much time for sewing. As I said it was made in a rush and the result didn't please me very much. The bodice wasn't of any use, so I unpicked it from the skirt and made this in to a petticoat by attaching a waistband. I had scraps of this fabric left and so I could use them for the ruches on the robe, which also created an optical connection to them.

That's me back in 2003!
